My project addresses the issue of homelessness and the ways that we can try to help restore a sense of dignity in the daily lives of the homeless community here in Austin, when there are a number of challenges working against them. There have been many interventions into all aspects of homelessness, and my project is one solution to try and combat it, or to at least make daily life a little bit easier and more comfortable.
I designed a system of “hygiene machines” that would provide accessible necessities. First, I plotted specific nodes in Austin based on district data and what I deemed to be significant spots, such as homeless shelters, parks, and public restrooms. Around these sites, I then organized several systems, comprised of the apparatuses in different formations. These instruments would provide basic toiletries in the forms of drinking water, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes, showers, and toilets.
What I really wanted to create from the beginning was something that could have a positive impact on the world. This is an extremely sensitive subject about which I am very passionate, so I have attempted to tread lightly. Fundamentally, I envisioned this system to help increase confidence, as well as bolster health, by providing access to the essentials that every human being should have a right to.
