CHILD BEING is the idea that children should be unapologetically themselves in today’s society without conforming to the gender roles assigned to them by clothing brands and marketers. In any department store you can find a boys’ and girls’ section. The messages for both are different simply because of their gender: girls are pink, boys are blue, girls are cute, boys are tough. These divisions in retail push kids further into representing pre-determined roles, whether or not the messages of the clothing are truly what children would choose for themselves. Children have the right to believe that anything they want in this world is possible; when fashion dictates their color preferences and ideals, that warps what our society could become. My goal is to bring awareness to the idea that gender should not matter in today’s world, and to empower children to be the individuals they want to be through the creation of their own shirts in any color and with any message they desire. Children have an unlimited potential and to limit that based on their anatomy is a crime against humanity and equality.
