1 + 1
This self-initiated capstone thesis revolves around the question: “How can I make female mentorship more efficient and engaging?” I was inspired to focus on the relationship between college-aged and adolescent girls because I served as a mentor for a middle school girl during my freshman year of college. Although I was fulfilled by the experience and I believe mentorship is undoubtedly helpful, I felt there were some problems to be addressed. Sometimes mentorship sessions are awkward, boring, or simply don’t reach a deeper level. Most mentorship activities (if provided at all) feel too much like schoolwork and provide too many vague, blanketed prompts. My goal with the 1 + 1 mentorship kit is to provide mentors and mentees with a comprehensive guide to facilitate conversation and make the overall experience more fun and tactile. The branding of the kit is meant to be feminine, strong, and friendly. The hot magenta color is bold, while the rounded typeface is playful. The materials used throughout (natural wood, pink felt, and colored pens) are meant to engage the mentee and invite them to use the kit consistently. This kit should be carried with pride and spark curiosity in peers. When experiencing this work, I hope to convey the feeling of being a pre-teen female and thus underline the necessity of my project and the overall power of empathy between two individuals.
